Micrographia: play with words
Today I’m in the mood to play with words...
Today I’m in the mood to play with words. I love to move words around, so they bump into each other, and surprise us with lives of their own. I like to think of words in different ways from what we ordinarily do, and see if I can make interesting word combinations to spark unique thinking. Some of my wordplay carries some fairly deep messaging, while others tend to be fun and even silly. Either way, I enjoy the process and hope to create some meaningful micrographs.
In the realm of Parkinson’s disease, there are many symptoms, one of which is micrographia. People with Parkinson’s (PWP) tend to experience a shrinking of our movements, in this case with respect to handwriting. I remember not too long ago before I began taking medication for my Parkinson’s, I was with some other officers of our state Fulbright Association. We were at the bank to sign account documents so I could become an official signer on the account. As I carefully signed one of the documents, our then President of the organization commented on how “carefully” I signed my name. This was out of the ordinary for me, and it surprised me that someone who had never seen me write would comment on it. He was absolutely correct in his observation. I had written my name with very small, careful letters.
As I’ve thought more about micrographia, I’ve decided to include a section of this website which is dedicated to “small writing” or “micro-graphs”. Rather than fully exploring a topic, I plan to write less so the reader can interpret more. There may be no absolute interpretations, but I hope they spark some thought and discussion. Here are some initial micrographs.
Insight. Out of sight.
Sight unseen.
Make a scene.
Scenic view.

Our insight adds meaning and value.

I can. Reach for the sky.
Stretch myself and my muscles.
Loosen my limbs.
Relax myself to strength.

Bradykinesia.
Amnesia.
I forgot how I used to move.
Slow movements.

I oughta do my exercises.
Life is fraught with challenges.
I challenge myself to do more with less.

Unbalanced.
Balance beam.
I beam with pride.
Didn’t think I could, but I tried.
I cried, but relied
On myself and my will.
I’ll try. No, I will.
